Working Meeting with Representatives of Religious Organizations

On July 25 and 26, 2024, Public Defender Levan Ioseliani held a working meeting with representatives of religious organizations operating in Georgia. The role of religion in the development of the country, promotion of inter-religious cooperation, tolerance and tolerant environment, main challenges in terms of freedom of religion and belief and solutions to them were discussed at the meeting.

Representatives of the Apostolic Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Georgia, Administration of All Muslims of Georgia, Union of Georgia Jews, Apostolic Administration of the Latin Catholics of the Caucasus, Gospel Faith Church of Georgia, Evangelical Lutheran Church of Georgia, Theological Council of the Yezidis of Georgia, Evangelical Alliance of Georgia - Evangelical Protestant Church of Georgia and Salvation Army of Georgia took part in the meeting.

The Public Defender introduced the mandate and activities of the Office to the participants in the meeting in the direction of protection of religious freedom. He also spoke about the investigation of alleged hate crimes committed on religious grounds.

Among the issues discussed at the working meeting in terms of freedom of religion were the new system of mandatory conscription of military personnel and the procedure for data processing of citizens, enrolled in the reserve, based on their confession; issues of protection, restitution, restoration, ownership of religious, cult buildings - cultural heritage monuments, as well as obtaining construction permits; the recommendation of the Public Defender for religious minorities regarding the possibility of guaranteed rest during religious holidays, if desired, and the current practice of teaching religion in general educational institutions.
