First Deputy Public Defender Takes Part in GANHRI Events

On May 6-8, 2024, in Geneva (Switzerland), Tamar Gvaramadze, First Deputy Public Defender of Georgia, and Mariam Tavdgiridze, Head of the Department of International Relations of the Office, participated in various events held within the framework of the annual meeting of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI).

On May 6, Tamar Gvaramadze presented a report at the event of the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI), which was dedicated to the democratic space and the challenges faced by human rights defenders. Tamar Gvaramadze talked about the activities and experience of the Public Defender's Office, how the Office monitors the rights of assembly, expression and association, and the rights situation of human rights defenders, as well as her experience in terms of relations with both national and international organizations, cooperation of the Office with the OSCEOffice for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, the European Union, the Council of Europe and UN human rights mechanisms.

On May 7, Tamar Gvaramadze presented a report at the event organized by GANHRI concerning the role and practice of national human rights institutions in the direction of protecting the rights of internationally protected persons and stateless persons. Tamar Gvaramadze spoke about the best practices of the Public Defender regarding the commitments undertaken within the framework of the Global Compact on Refugees and their implementation.

GANHRI Annual Conference on Business and Human Rights was held on May 8. Along with other high-level speakers, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, gave a welcome speech at the conference, calling on representatives of national human rights institutions to work more actively in the direction of business and human rights. Within the framework of the conference, the third session was particularly important, which was dedicated to the monitoring and protection of online civil space by national human rights institutions, the need for the protection of human rights defenders, technologies and companies' obligations.

Within the framework of the same visit, Tamar Gvaramadze and Mariam Tavdgiridze participated in the GANHRI Bureau and General Assembly, and also attended the ENNHRI General Assembly.
