Report on Human Rights Education and Learning Environment in General Education Space
The present document is a report of the Human Rights Academy of the Public Defender of Georgia on human rights education and learning environment in the general education space.
According to the Organic Law of Georgia, "The Public Defender of Georgia shall be engaged in educational activities in the field of human rights and freedoms." To carry out this function, the Human Rights Academy of the Public Defender implemented a project promoting human rights education on the general education level in a period from November 2017 to April 2018, which was funded by the Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR).
The report identifies problems and challenges in the field of human rights education - curricula, general education regulation framework, school climate and school management/administration practices.
For the purpose of carrying out educational activities in the field of human rights and freedoms, including for supporting human rights education on the general education level, the Human Rights Academy of the Public Defender conducted quantitative and qualitative researches in 64 public and private schools throughout Georgia. Interviews were conducted with three target groups: 7-12 graders, teachers of subjects that cover human rights aspects and school administration (1480 interviews in total).
