Public Defender Participates in International Conference – National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) in Unstable Times: Resilience and Challenges

On October 21-22, 2024, Levan Ioseliani, Public Defender of Georgia, at the invitation of Anahit Manasyan, Ombudsman of the Republic of Armenia, participated in the international conference held in Yerevan - "National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) in Unstable Periods: Resilience and Challenges".

The event was attended by the Prime Minister and President of the Republic of Armenia, as well as representatives of international non-governmental organizations and human rights institutions and equality bodies of the Council of Europe countries.

The conference participants emphasized the role of NHRIs in the effective protection and promotion of human rights and freedoms, especially in building a society based on the principles of equality; discussed opportunities for cooperation and support – for sharing best practices in crisis situations; talked about the importance of ensuring institutional independence and impartiality.

The subjects of discussion at the sessions were: the impact of institutions/NHRIs on human rights protection system; issues of cooperation with human rights organizations to raise civil awareness of human rights; implementation of international standards and sharing of best practices for effective implementation of recommendations. Attention was paid to the protection of the rights of various vulnerable groups and the mechanisms of urgent and immediate response to their needs, as well as the need to build an inclusive society and strengthen equality bodies.

The conference dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the ombudsman institution of the Republic of Armenia was supported by the Council of Europe.
