Public Defender Meets with US Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Georgia

On July 19, Levan Ioseliani, Public Defender of Georgia, met with Robin Dunnigan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to Georgia.

The topics discussed at the meeting included the human rights situation in the country, the lawsuits filed with the Constitutional Court against the Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence, the perspective of their consideration, and the Public Defender's participation in the said process. In addition, the Ambassador showed interest in the proportionality of the actions of the law enforcement officers during the protests ongoing against the law, the condition of the arrested persons and the ongoing investigation process. The parties also talked about the upcoming parliamentary elections and the mandate of the Public Defender in terms of involvement in election processes.

The long-term cooperation between the US Embassy and the Public Defender’s Office, as well as the ongoing USAID project aimed at strengthening the Public Defender’s Office in this direction, was also discussed at the meeting.

Levan Ioseliani thanked the Ambassador for the support that the US authorities and the American people have been constantly providing to the Public Defender’s Office in order to establish democratic values ​​in the country.
