Public Defender’s Visit to U.S.

Ucha Nanuashvili, Public Defender of Georgia, held meetings with Bridget A. Brink, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, Michael G. Kozak, Senior Advisor, Bureau of Human Rights, Labor and Democracy, and representatives of the U.S. Department of State, the Department of Justice and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The Public Defender also met with Richard Norland, Foreign Policy Advisor to the Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff, DoD, Jonathan Katz, Senior Fellow, CMFUS, Congressman David Price and representatives of the World Bank.

The Public Defender provided detailed information on positive changes and challenges in the field of human rights in Georgia.

The Public Defender emphasized the shortcomings in the judiciary, delayed investigation into the cases of alleged ill-treatment by police, necessity for establishment of an independent investigative mechanism, the constitutional reform and labour safety issues. Discussions also focused on high-profile cases; detailed questions were asked by the American side regarding the Mukhtarli case.

The rights situation in the occupied territories, restrictions on the teaching of the Georgian language and detentions of Georgian citizens at the dividing line were discussed as well.

At the meeting with Washington officials, the Public Defender also spoke about the implementation of the law on discrimination, violations of the minority rights, the situation of gender equality and other issues.
