Presentation of Project “Reproductive Rights are Human Rights”

On November 22, 2017, the Public Defender of Georgia held a presentation of the project “Reproductive Rights are Human Rights” and provided the analysis of the national policy and legislation (desk research) of sexual and reproductive health and well-being in relation to the international obligations undertaken by the country.

The research reviews sexual and reproductive health and well-being in the country, assesses the activities carried out by the state and offers recommendations. The document was prepared by the Public Defender's Office with technical support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Georgia Office.

A memorandum of cooperation was also signed between the Public Defender’s Office of Georgia and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Georgia Office at the event. Within the framework of mutual cooperation, national survey will be carried out in 2018 to evaluate the access to sexual and reproductive health and rights, as well as the problems and challenges in terms of the protection and realization of these rights.

MPs, representatives of the Inter-Agency Commission working on the issues of gender equality, violence against women and domestic violence, various governmental agencies, scientific circles, research organizations, civil society and international organizations took part in the event.

The abovementioned cooperation is underway within the framework of the Swedish government-funded UN Joint Programme for Gender Equality 2017-2020.
