Public Defender’s Statement on April 9
On April 9, 1989, the punitive action of the Soviet army claimed the lives of 21 freedom-loving people. They sacrificed themselves to fight for a better future of their homeland. Their sacrifice was not futile. On that day, common pain united the country, and already 2 years later, on April 9, 1991, Georgia adopted the Act of Independence, while on May 26, Georgia was declared an independent state.
Since April 9, 1989, the entire nation, all the citizens of Georgia have spared no effort and energy to preserve the freedom gained with blood and pain, with the sacrifice of little girls and boys.
We thank them for our freedom
