Statement of Council of National Minorities of Public Defender

The Council of National Minorities of the Public Defender of Georgia is concerned about the obstruction of the work of the Public Defender and her representatives at the Ninotsminda Orphanage.

The Council considers that the Public Defender should be able to exercise her constitutional powers without hindrance. In this and any other case, it is necessary for the State to ensure the ability of the Public Defender to exercise the powers provided by law.

The Council of National Minorities emphasizes the importance of conducting an objective and transparent investigation into all allegations of violations of the rights of the child and presenting the results of the investigation to the public.

The Council of National Minorities calls on all organizations and individuals directly or indirectly involved in the processes related to the Ninotsminda Orphanage to be guided only by the best interests of the child and not by political, ideological, personal or other interests.

In order to ensure a high standard of the protection of human rights in the country, the Council of National Minorities expresses its support to the Public Defender and the Public Defender's Office. The Council considers that ensuring the independence, objectivity and impartiality of the Public Defender and the smooth exercise of her powers is essential.
