On November 16-19, 2021, Tamar Gvaramadze and Ekaterine Skhiladze, Deputies of the Public Defender of Georgia, paid a working visit to Brussels, the capital of the Kingdom of Belgium. During the visit, meetings were held with representatives of the EU External Action Service, the Directorate-General for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations and the Directorate-General for Justice and Consumers.

Representatives of the Public Defender spoke about the situation of human rights and freedom in Georgia, emphasizing the role and importance of the Public Defender as a human rights institution in the country. Particular attention was paid to the most pressing issues of the country at this stage; in particular, the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic and the difficult socio-economic situation, the July 5 events and their ineffective investigation, challenges in the judiciary, shortcomings in the election of judges, attacks on NGOs, the Public Defender and pluralism. Particular interest was demonstrated in the Public Defender's assessment of Mikheil Saakashvili's case.

Representatives of the Public Defender also held bilateral meetings with representatives of the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI) and the European Network of Equality Bodies (EQUINET) and discussed opportunities for future cooperation, specific activities, etc.

It is noteworthy that support was expressed to the Public Defender and her work in the field of human rights was praised several times during the meetings.
