On November 6-8, 2023, Public Defender Levan Ioseliani and First Deputy Public Defender Tamar Gvaramadze are participating in the 14^th International Conference of National Human Rights Institutes (NHRI) in Copenhagen (Denmark). The conference is devoted to the role of national human rights institutions in the prevention of torture and other ill-treatment.

At the event, Levan Ioseliani spoke about the performance of functions of the National Preventive Mechanism by the Public Defender's Office in the fight against torture in Georgia. He emphasized the importance of implementation of preventive monitoring in Georgia and the process of the development of the mechanism.

Tamar Gvaramadze, as the rapporteur of the working group, spoke about the difficulties and challenges in terms of monitoring the private institutions, including long-term care institutions for older persons, by the National Prevention Mechanism.

Parallel to the conference, Levan Ioseliani held bilateral meetings with the director of the Danish Institute for Human Rights, where he discussed examples of past successful cooperation and issues of future cooperation.

The conference is being organized and hosted by the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights (UPCHR), the Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR), the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). The conference will discuss ways to effectively use the mandate of NHRIs to protect people from torture and ill-treatment.
