Public Defender’s Statement on the Day of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

On June 14, the Day of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated in Georgia, the purpose of which is to recognize the important role of persons with disabilities in our society, to analyze the existing challenges and to talk about the progress achieved. This day reminds us that the State is obliged to create equal opportunities for all, to eliminate the barriers and inequalities that persons with disabilities face every day, and to take all possible measures to create an inclusive and equal environment.

The Public Defender, within his mandate, constantly studies the rights situation of persons with disabilities in Georgia. Today we would like to publish two special reports:

- Monitoring of inclusive education in higher educational institutions;

- Monitoring report on resource schools;

These reports focus on the importance of providing quality and continuous inclusive education, which is a necessary prerequisite for the realization and full inclusion of persons with disabilities in public life. The reports provide a detailed overview of the current situation in the education system, analyze challenges and provide recommendations for their elimination.

The above-mentioned special reports were developed with the support of the United Nations Development Programme and the European Union.
