Association for the Prevention of Torture Positively Assesses Performance of National Preventive Mechanism of Public Defender of Georgia

The Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT) positively assesses the performance of the National Preventive Mechanism of the Public Defender of Georgia and posts a video showing the activities of the Mechanism on its social networks.

In 2020, the National Preventive Mechanism made 135 visits to 104 penitentiary institutions. Along with the introduction of additional monitoring methods, the team of the National Preventive Mechanism is motivated to maintain a sufficient frequency of preventive visits during the pandemic and to successfully fulfill its mandate.

The Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT) emphasizes that the purpose of the monitoring and recommendations issued by the National Preventive Mechanism of the Public Defender of Georgia during the COVID-19 pandemic is to:

  • Reduce the number of prisoners
  • Protect prisoners' health and provide adequate medical services
  • Compensate for the restrictions imposed on contact with the outside world.
