Sexual Harassment - The Challenges We Face

On 31 March, 2017, the Public Defender held another public debate, the theme of which was sexual harassment. The challenges relating to sexual harassment and possible solution to the problem were discussed at the debate. Detection of and response to the cases of sexual harassment, as well as their prevention were also discussed.

Public Defender Ucha Nanuashviliu focused on the practice of blaming the victims of sexual harassment and the lack of response mechanisms. On March 28, 2017, the Public Defender of Georgia addressed the Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee with a special proposal regarding fulfillment of obligations under the Istanbul Convention and regulation of sexual harassment by the legislation.

"We still actively demand legislative regulation of the issue, but apart from the legislative regulation, introduction of internal institutional response mechanisms by employers is of great importance. In this regard, the Public Defender's practice of introduction of internal mechanism for the prevention of sexual harassment is worth noting", - said Ucha Nanuashvili.

It should be noted that e-learning course on sexual harassment was prepared for the website of the Public Defender’s Office by the help of the UN Women, the aim of which was to raise public awareness.

Speeches were delivered at the debate by Ekaterine Skhiladze, Deputy Public Defender, Dimitri Tskitishvili, representative of the Parliament’s Gender Equality Council, Mari Tsereteli, representative of Women’s Information Center, and Baia Pataraia, head of the non-governmental organization Sapari.

Public Defender's public debates, funded by the EU project "Support to the Public Defender's Office II", are held on Friday of each month on various important issues.
