Regional Forum - United Against Femicide

On October 22, 2024, Irine Chikhladze, Deputy Public Defender of Georgia, and Sopio Rusetski, Head of the Public Defender's Gender Department, participated in the second regular regional forum "United against Femicide", which was organized by FemPlatz, a women's rights organization, in Belgrade (Serbia).

Representatives and experts of international and non-governmental organizations from Serbia, Georgia, Croatia and Macedonia received information about the functioning of independent femicide monitoring bodies and their monitoring methodologies, shared experiences, practices, gaps and challenges in legislation and institutional level of different countries, planned joint activities in the direction of advocacy and agreed to strengthen cooperation in order to prevent femicide.

In their welcome speeches, Brankica Janković, Commissioner for the Protection of Equality of the Republic of Serbia, and Jan Bratu, Head of the OSCE Mission in Serbia, discussed the objectives of the forum and the importance of implementing the decisions made.

Deputy Public Defender Irine Chikhladze introduced the Public Defender's femicide monitoring mechanism to the participants of the forum. She spoke about the monitoring results, the achievements and challenges in the country in the direction of violence against women and the extreme form of gender-based violence - femicide. She also emphasized the importance of statistics production and cooperation with agencies.

Within the framework of her visit to Serbia, the Deputy Public Defender of Georgia held a meeting with Brankica Janković, Commissioner for the Protection of Equality of the Republic of Serbia, and discussed the prospects of future cooperation between the equality bodies.
