Information Meetings on Early Marriage in Marneuli

On March 29, 2017, the Department of Gender Equality of the Public Defender's Office organized two information meetings in the public schools of the Kvemo Kartli villages of Sabirkendi and Takalo. The meetings were attended by school students and teachers.

The aim of the informational meetings was to raise awareness of school students about early marriage, get information about the cases of early marriage in the region and find solutions. The causes, forms and risks of early marriage were discussed at the meeting. Participants were provided with information about legislative changes and available services. They showed particular interest in the statistics on early marriage and under-age parents.

We must particularly emphasize the active involvement of the students in the discussion. They recalled a number of cases of early and forced marriages. Both the students and the teachers said it would be good to hold similar information meetings for parents too, as they are often the initiators of early marriage.

The Department of Gender Equality of the Public Defender's Office continues to hold information meetings in various regions of Georgia in order to raise awareness about violence against women and prevention of early marriage.
