Bulletin, Periodic edition – June 2016
The Public Defender of Georgia has presented an information bulletin of June. The document briefly reviews Public Defender’s activities, meetings with heads of state agencies, international visits, trainings, presentations of special reports, amicus curiae briefs, special statements on important developments, events organized by the Public Defender’s regional offices and educational activities of the Public Defender’s Office.
The bulletin also reviews the cases which were successfully completed due to the Public Defender's active participation, including certain cases of protection of human rights and the decisions, which will lead to systemic changes and will contribute to building of a democratic state based on western values. Among them we may mention the ratification of the Optional Protocol to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child on a Communications Procedure by the Parliament of Georgia, which will allow each child to file a complaint regarding violation of his/her rights. The relevant recommendation was included in the Public Defender’s parliamentary report 2015.
In the bulletin you will find information about the Public Defender's assessment of the hearing of his annual report at the plenary session of the Parliament and the resolution adopted by the MPs; the content of the lawsuit submitted to the Constitutional Court, in which the Public Defender considers detention of drug users as unconstitutional; another public debate that discussed the gaps in the law on environmental impact, low public participation in the decision-making process and other issues; the report of the Council of Europe Group of Experts on trafficking issues and the report of the US Department of State on the labour exploitation of Georgia.
The June bulletin reviews a lot of interesting and important issues in terms of protection of human rights.
