International Day for Tolerance

On November 16, 2021, the Public Defender of Georgia and the Tolerance Center of the Public Defender of Georgia held an event marking the International Day for Tolerance. Books on Georgia's ethnic and religious diversity were presented and advocates of tolerance were traditionally awarded at the event.

"This year has been quite difficult both in terms of the tense political environment and protection of human rights, including intolerance and discrimination against minorities. The human rights situation is especially complicated by the scale of the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on the rights situation of certain groups,” Nino Lomjaria, Public Defender of Georgia, said in her speech.

Koba Chopliani, Coordinator of the Council of National Minorities of the Public Defender, introduced the activities of the Tolerance Center to the audience and spoke about the importance of a culture of tolerance in the country. Scientific editors Lavrenti Janiashvili and Sophio Zviadadze presented books on ethnic and religious diversity and spoke about diversity, its charm and challenges. Representatives of the Councils of Religions and National Minorities evaluated the activities of the Councils and discussed the current situation.

The Council of National Minorities awarded the following advocates of tolerance:

Nomination - Person - Mari Mikoyan, a doctor, an activist of the Armenian community and the Head of the non-governmental organization Generation I.

Nomination - Public servant - Tariel Nakaidze, Member of Parliament of Georgia.

Nomination - Honorary members of the Council of National Minorities of the Public Defender - Lily Safarova, a teacher and Yezidi community activist, and professor Marine Solomonishvili, Head of the Lea International Foundation and the Council of Jewish Women.

The Council of Religions awarded:

Nomination - Person - Ran Gidor, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Israel to Georgia.

Nomination - Organization - Solidarity Community, an organization that promotes the establishment of the practice of solidarity in the Adjara region.

Nomination - Politician/public servant: Tariel Nakaidze, Member of Parliament of Georgia.
