Statement of the Public Defender on election of the Chairperson of the Supreme Court

The Public Defender comments on the election of the Chairperson of the Supreme Court. It is welcoming news that this lengthy and difficult process was conducted against the backdrop of greater transparency and participation of stakeholders. It should be especially mentioned that Nino Gvenetadze is the first women in history of Georgia to hold this position.

I wish Nino Gvenetadze success in her future and very responsible work. I express a hope that the new Chair of the Supreme Court will be guided by high standards of court independence and impartiality in her work, pass reasoned decisions and act in compliance with primacy of human rights. At the same time, I hope that Nino Gvenetadze will bring significant personal contribution to enhancement of independence of every individual judge and the entire court system from outside influence and strengthen such public perception of the system. Justice should not only be enforced but also seen that it has been enforced. The right to fair trial is one of the most important rights. It is the right through which all other rights are being realized. I hope that the court system will become a place where not only none of the human rights are threatened but where effective protection of these rights from any kind of infringement is ensured.
