Public Defender Discusses Sexual Harassment and Its Prevention
On 30 November 2018, Public Defender Nino Lomjaria discussed sexual harassment and its prevention at the high-level meeting of the UN thematic group.
In her speech, Nino Lomjaria talked about the practice of studying the cases of sexual harassment by her Office. She pointed out that the number of persons referring to the Public Defender has increased during last two years through active involvement of media outlets and public campaigns, and that despite the lack of evidence and imperfect legislative framework, the Public Defender, based on international practices, does not leave any case of alleged sexual harassment without reaction.
For the purpose of effectively combating sexual harassment, the Public Defender considers it necessary that the legislation be amended so that to facilitate correct legal assessment of the issue on the one hand and to respond to the wrong psycho-social sentiments of the society or victims themselves related to this phenomenon on the other hand.
Nino Lomjaria talked about the internal mechanism of responding to sexual harassment, which has been functioning in the Public Defender's Office since 2014. She also underlined the electronic training course on sexual harassment, prepared by UN Women and posted on the website of the Public Defender, which had been passed by a number of organizations and state agencies.
