On 20 November 2018, the Public Defender of Georgia visited the School of Law of the University of Georgia and held a public lecture. Nino Lomjaria introduced the Public Defender's mandate to the students, professors and representatives of the administration and discussed major human rights challenges in the country. She also spoke about the importance of the Public Defender’s Office of Georgia among the international human rights institutions.
In addition, during the two-hour meeting held in a question-and-answer mode, the Public Defender talked about the occupied territories and the rights situation of people living along the dividing line, growth in the rate of identification of the cases of domestic violence and femicide, individual risk assessment method, persons with disabilities, including environmental adaptation, employment and other issues.
Nino Lomjaria emphasized the importance of qualifications and independence of investigation when talking about fair trial. She noted that the Public Defender had lobbied the establishment of an independent investigative mechanism for years, since the investigation of the Prosecutor’s Office into the cases of alleged ill-treatment had often been ineffective.
The Public Defender spoke about the necessity of judicial reforms as well, including provision of guarantees for judicial independence, and introduced her recommendations in this direction.
Students showed particular interest in the practices of the Public Defender and issues related to safety at work.
