Public Defender Visits Detained Protesters

“Unfortunately, as during previous protests, use of excessive force by the police has become a common practice, and the fact that 22 out of 25 detainees indicate physical violence is an alarming statistic. In addition, it is noteworthy that people who committed specific alleged crimes should be held accountable. To date, we have had many citizens injured, but no law enforcement officer has been found guilty of abuse of power or violence. The Special Investigation Service should answer this issue,” Levan Ioseliani, the Public Defender of Georgia, said after visiting protesters in the Tbilisi temporary detention facility.

Yesterday and today - on February 2 and 3, the Public Defender and his representatives visited 25 people, detained on administrative charges during a protest rally held in Tbilisi, at the Tbilisi and Dusheti temporary detention centers and the Ingorokva University Clinic. 22 of them indicated ill-treatment by law enforcement officers.
