Public Defender’s Meetings in US Department of State and US Agency for International Development (USAID)
Public Defender of Georgia Levan Ioseliani and First Deputy Public Defender Tamar Gvaramadze, who are on an official visit to Washington, met with the leadership of various bureaus of the US Department of State and the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
At the meetings, the Public Defender spoke about the importance of the support of the United States of America and emphasized Georgia's expectation that the continuation of the long-term relationship between the two countries will help to implement programmes that will allow Georgia to maintain its democratic development course.
During the discussion of the enforcement of the Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence, the Public Defender presented his position regarding the law and introduced the opinion of the friend of the court (amicus curiae) sent to the Constitutional Court.
Other topics discussed included the upcoming parliamentary elections and the state of human rights protection in the pre-election period, including the joint statement of the Public Defender of Georgia and the Central Election Commission, where politicians and the media were called to ensure an election environment free of discrimination and hate speech. The Public Defender noted that the institution has been studying all the cases of violations for years and intensively providing the relevant reports to the public.
Meetings were held with Monica Jacobsen, Deputy Assistant Secretary at the US Department of State, Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, Brandon Yoder, Deputy Assistant Secretary at the US Department of State, Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, and Joshua Huck, Deputy Assistant Secretary at the US Department of State, Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs. A meeting wase also held with Elizabth Mckee, Assistant Administrator at the US Agency for International Development (USAID), Europe and Eurasia Bureau.
