Public Defender’s Statement on Abduction of Minor in Marneuli

On February 14, 2020, the Public Defender of Georgia, Nino Lomjaria, arrived in Marneuli and met with the parents of an abducted underage girl, a witness of the abduction and the Head of the Marneuli Police Department.

“According to eyewitnesses, the kidnapping was extremely cruel. The kidnappers put a sack over the girl’s head. The girl resisted and asked for help, but no one helped. The whereabouts of the girl must be immediately identified and she must be immediately returned home. Unfortunately, the response of law enforcers is often ineffective. It is imperative that criminals be strictly punished by law in order to set an example for those who refuse to abandon the ugly practice of abduction in our country. Different scenarios may be spread, but we know exactly that the kidnapping was against the girl's will,” the Public Defender said.

It should also be noted that the abducted juvenile was attending educational courses in Marneuli and the Public Defender believes that such offences prevent girls from receiving education, as their parents are afraid to send them to the cities for education.
