Public Defender's Meeting with Diplomatic Corps and International Organizations
On 24 September 2015 the Public Defender presented an initiative on conduction of regular meetings in a roundtable format to representatives of the diplomatic corps and international organizations. The topics of the meetings will be ongoing and priority issues in the field of human rights.
At the opening of the event Public Defender Ucha Nanuashvili talked about the importance of stronger engagement of the international community in the protection of human rights and constant exchange of information between the Public Defender’s Office, the diplomatic corps and international organizations.
Janosh Herman, the Head of the EU Delegation to Georgia, talked about the prospects of intensification of cooperation and consultations with the Public Defender’s Office.
Niko Tatulashvili, the Head of the Department of International Relations and Communications of the Public Defender's Office, reviewed the functions of the newly created Department and its efforts carried out since March 2015. He noted that the Department combines two major directions - international relations and communication with media. According to him, the Department coordinates the projects ongoing in the Public Defender's Office, periodically updates international organizations and non-governmental organizations of the Public Defender's efforts, proactively provides information to the media and ensures transparency of the Office activities.
At the end of the meeting the Public Defender answered the diplomats’ questions. Ucha Nanuashvili spoke about the elimination of discrimination, legal guarantees for protection of the rights of refugees, cooperation between the Public Defender’s Office and the Parliament, as well as the human rights action plan and the quality of its performance.
The representatives of the diplomatic corps and the international organizations operating in Georgia positively assessed the Public Defender’s initiative and expressed their willingness for deepening future cooperation.
