Public Defender of Georgia Elected as Full Member of Asian Ombudsman Association
The Public Defender of Georgia was elected as a full member of the Asian Ombudsman Association at the General Assembly of the Association in South Korea.
The Board of Directors of the Asian Ombudsmen Association decided to expand the mandate of the Public Defender of Georgia given his role and importance in the region. Full membership gives the Public Defender the right to vote and be a member of the General Assembly, which in turn has the right to elect new members. It is also responsible for the selection of the Board of Directors and an auditor, as well as for the approval of their reports.
The full membership of the Asian Ombudsman Association once again emphasized the international status and importance of the Public Defender of Georgia.
The Asian Ombudsmen Association (AOA) was established on April 16, 1996, as ombudsmen's non-governmental, non-political, independent and professional forum. The main goal of the Association is to promote the development of the ombudsman's institutions throughout Asia. The Association currently has 34 members from 17 countries and is managed by the nine-member Board of Directors.
The Public Defender's Office is a member of several associations of national human rights institutions. It should be noted that in March 2016, the Public Defender of Georgia, together with the German, Croatian and Finnish ombudsmen, was elected as a member of the bureau of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI). In the same year, by the decision of the General Assembly of the European Network of Human Rights National Institutions, the Public Defender of Georgia was elected as a member of the European Coordinating Committee (ECC) for a three-year term for the second time.
