Presentation of Special Report on Internally Displaced Persons
On June 8, 2017, the Public Defender presented a special report on the situation of IDPs to the Government of Georgia, diplomatic corps and international and local organizations.
At the opening of the event, Public Defender Ucha Nanuashvili spoke about the rights of internally displaced persons, the changes that had been recently carried out, the problems existing in the mentioned filed and the challenges faced by the state.
The report reviews the efforts of the Public Defender's Office in the direction of the situation of the internally displaced persons; specifically, it is noted that last year the Public Defender’s representatives paid more than 250 visits to the IDPs’ settlements and provided legal consultations for more than 700 IDPs.
The Public Defender's Office is actively involved in the work of the commission working on IDPs issues under the Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Accommodation and Refugees of Georgia. The Public Defender is also a member of the supervisory board of the action plan for the implementation of the state strategy on IDPs.
In 2016, 179 internally displaced families, living in life or health-threatening settlements, were provided with housing. However, the issue of living in the damaged buildings still remains a serious problem.
