Statement on Implementation of Investigative Actions in Presence of a Minor

The Public Defender's Office echoes the reports disseminated regarding the investigative actions ongoing in the house of Dodi Kharkheli, in the presence of his minor son. According to the reports, the minor was locked in the house and his uncle was not allowed to meet with him.

The Public Defender's Office communicated with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and representatives of the Office also went to the scene of the incident. According to the information provided by both the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the minor's family member, the child has already been taken out of home and is not attending the ongoing processes.

It should be emphasized that it is absolutely unacceptable to carry out actions harmful to a minor during the conduct of investigative actions. The law enforcement agency is obliged to assess the situation in advance and do everything possible to create a safe environment for the minor. And, in case of impossibility of prior consideration, the minor should be removed from the place where processes are ongoing in a timely manner, with the involvement of a family member, relative or trusted person, and if this is not possible, the involvement of a social worker and a psychologist should be ensured.

The Public Defender's Office will examine this fact and will ensure all appropriate responses within the scope of its authority.
