Discussion about Georgian Legislation and Practice relating to Protection and Safety of Journalists
On June 12, 2023, Public Defender Levan Ioseliani participated in the round table organized by the Council of Europe, where a study titled "Review of Georgian Legislation and Practice relating to the Protection and Safety of Journalists" was presented. The study was prepared by the Council of Europe at the request of the Public Defender’s Office of Georgia.
"The Public Defender’s Office has studied dozens of cases of offences committed against media representatives in recent years and reflected them in the annual parliamentary reports. Unfortunately, a number of investigations are pending, where investigative agencies have not yet identified perpetrators or held them responsible. We have been saying for years and I would like to point out once again that the high rate of offences committed against journalists and other media representatives contributes to the creation of an environment of impunity", Levan Ioseliani said in his welcome speech.
The study, which was presented by the Council of Europe expert, Peter Noorlander, analyzes the compliance of the legal framework and practice of Georgia with the Council of Europe standards laid down in the recommendation of the Committee of Ministers CM/Rec(2016)4.
The event was organized by the Council of Europe Project“Strengthening Media Freedom, Internet Governance and Personal Data Protection in Georgia”.
