Deputy Public Defender and Staff of Public Defender's Office Takes Part in Ill-treatment Prevention Events
On 28-29 November 2018, Deputy Public Defender Giorgi Burjanadze attended an international conference in Yerevan, the capital of the Republic of Armenia, which was dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the imposition of the National Preventive Mechanism functions on the human rights defender’s institution of the Republic of Armenia.
The Deputy Public Defender presented a report on the monitoring carried out in the establishments of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia and the relevant methodology. He also answered the questions of conference participants. During the conference, many bilateral meetings were also held with representatives of ombudsman’s institutions and international organizations of various countries.
Other attendees of the conference from Georgia were Nika Kvaratskhelia, Head of the Department of Prevention and Monitoring of the Public Defender's Office (who is also a member of the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture), Eka Khutsishvili, Head of the Department of Criminal Justice of the Public Defender’s Office, and Mariam Tavdgiridze, a chief specailist of the Department of International Relations, Project Management and Civic Education of the Public Defender’s Office of Georgia.
On behalf of the Public Defender's Office, we publicly express our support to the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia, especially the National Preventive Mechanism, and wish them success in their future activities.
On 3-4 December 2018, in the Italian city of Milan, Deputy Public Defender Giorgi Burjanadze and Head of the Prevention and Monitoring Department Nika Kvaratskhelia attended a meeting organized by the Association for the Prevention of Torture and the OSCEOfficeforDemocratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR). The theme of the meeting was the monitoring of migrant placement places. International challenges in this direction, international legal standards and practices of various countries were dsicussed at the event.
Within the framework of the working sessions, in-depth discussions were held about various issues, including the findings and practices of the National Preventive Mechanism of Georgia. The event was attended by the UN Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment, the President of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture, representatives of national preventive mechanisms of 26 countries and other international organizations.
