World Marks International Human Rights Defenders Day on December 9
On 9 December 2018, Public Defender Nino Lomjaria took part in an event organized by the Human Rights House in connection with the International Human Rights Defenders Day.
The aim of the event was to establish the International Human Rights Defenders Day in Georgia, whihc can raise awareness of the activities of human rights defenders and human rights organizations and adequately recognize their role.
The International Human Rights Defenders Day recognizes the role of human rights defenders in the development of a society and democracy and strengthening of peace. Despite the internationally recognized principles of the protection of human rights defenders, including the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders, unfortunately, harassment and persecution of human rights defenders and activists still continue.
Information booklets and posters developed by the Human Rights House in connection with the 20th anniversary of the Declaration on Human Rights Defenders were presented at the event, which gave detailed description of the threats faced by human rights defenders and the internationally recognized principles for their protection.
The event was attended by representatives of international organizations, diplomatic corps, NGOs and other stakeholders.
