Public Defender's Representatives Visit Detainees
On the night of January 11-12, 2025, Public Defender's representatives visited 10 citizens detained in Tbilisi and Batumi, including one minor and Gia Jvarsheishvili, a human rights defender for persons with disabilities, who was injured during the detention.
Five of the detainees indicate alleged ill-treatment by the police. For example, one of them states that as a result of alleged violence by the police, he has chest and head pains, and also scratches on his hands.
Three of the detainees expressed a desire for an investigation, about which the Public Defender's Office has already notified the Special Investigation Service for further legal response.
Most of the detainees indicate that the police officers did not inform them of the grounds for their detention or their rights. The four detainees also allege unethical treatment and verbal abuse by the police.
The Public Defender's Office continues to visit detainees and will provide additional information to the public.
