Informational Meetings in Samegrelo Region

In January 2020, Koka Mebonia, Public Defender's Regional Representative on Gender Issues, held informational meetings with teachers and parents of students of Zugdidi public school No 5, as well as women living in the villages of Jumi and Odishi.

Koka Mebonia spoke about the mandate of the Public Defender and the reports of the Public Defender relating to gender equality and domestic violence, as well as criminal, civil-legal and administrative-legal mechanisms for identification and elimination of violence against women and/or domestic violence, importance of projects aimed at women's economic empowerment, women's participation in the decision-making process, importance of researching women's needs, availability of services for victims of violence and necessity of support measures.

Participants of the meeting discussed gender stereotypes surrounding them, which promote violence against women and/or domestic violence.

At the end of the meeting, discussion was held about the role of the Public Defender in the fight against violence against women and domestic violence, as well as recommendations and tendencies in this direction.
