Public Defender’s Statement on the Tool of Assesssing the Risks of Violence against Women and Domestic Violence
The Public Defender of Georgia positively evaluates the introduction of a mechanism by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia for assessing and monitoring the risks of domestic violence and violence against women, the need for which had been indicated in a number of reports and recommendations by the Public Defender.
The Public Defender of Georgia expresses hope that the introduction of the risk assessment and monitoring mechanism will facilitate effective response to the cases of domestic violence, including elimination of systemic problems, and will have positive impact on the prevetion of gender-related killings of women (femicide).
It is important that the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia provide training of the employees of territorial units in relation to the issues of domestic violence and violence against women in order to increase their qualifications and sensitivity and enable them to effectively develop an individual action plan for victims, evaluate risks and carry out further monitoring.
In addition, the Public Defender expresses her willingness to continue cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia in order to facilitate effective resposne to the cases of violence against women and domestic violence.
