First Deputy Public Defender Talks in Geneva about Public Defender’s Role in Protecting Civil Society and Democratic Space
On September 25, 2025, in parallel with the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, a parallel discussion was organized by the Global Alliance for Human Rights (GANHRI): The Role of National Human Rights Institutions in Protecting Civil Society and Democratic Space.
Tamar Gvaramadze, First Deputy Public Defender of Georgia, who participated in the discussion, spoke about the role and authority of the Public Defender in protecting civil society activities; She discussed the regulatory norms in force regarding the activities of human rights defenders in Georgia and the legislative restrictions enacted in this direction in recent years, and introduced the participants to the amicus curiae opinions filed by the Public Defender with the Constitutional Court of Georgia and common courts regarding these restrictive norms, the special recommendation sent to the Ministry of Justice, public statements, and other responses.
