Public Defender Meets with Representative of Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the United Kingdom
On September 25, 2024, Levan Ioseliani, Public Defender of Georgia, and Elene Ghudushauri, Deputy Public Defender of Georgia, met with Chris Allan, Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), and Gareth Ward, Ambassador of Great Britain to Georgia.
The parties discussed the implementation process of the Law of Georgia on Transparency of Foreign Influence and the opinion of the friend of the court prepared by the Public Defender regarding the evaluation of the constitutionality of the law. They also talked about the Public Defender's attitude regarding the abolition of gender quotas in the electoral law, the objectivity of the investigation ongoing against those arrested during the protests, and the legal status of representatives of ethnic-religious minorities.
The guests also showed interest in the progress of the pre-election period in Georgia, the role of the Public Defender in the process of conducting the elections fairly and protecting human rights, and the quality of media freedom and security of rights protection activities.
Issues of future cooperation between the Public Defender’s Office of Georgia and the British Embassy were also discussed at the meeting.
