Visit to the Republic of South Korea

On November 22-23, 2022, Tamar Gvaramadze, First Deputy Public Defender of Georgia, and Nino Shalamberidze, a representative of the Public Defender’s Office, visited Seoul (Republic of South Korea) and attended the International Conference on Aging and the Rights of Older Persons organized by the Human Rights Commissioner, as well as the GANHRI Working GroupMeeting onthe Rights of Older Persons and Ageing.[1]

Within the framework of the visit, the First Deputy Public Defender of Georgia presented a report and shared information with members of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions about the participation of the Public Defender’s Office in the work of the United Nations Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing (OEWGA) and the Human Rights Council (HRC). The United Nations Open-Ended Working Group is the only UN intergovernmental body outside the Human Rights Council that allows national human rights institutions to engage and actively participate in its work and activities.

The International Conference on Aging and the Rights of Older Persons discussed challenges related to the rights of older persons and the results of the work on the text of the Convention on the Rights of Older Persons.


[1] The Public Defender’s Office has been an elected member of the Working Group of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions from the European region since 2018.
