International Conference on Assessment and Strengthening of the Impact of National Preventive Mechanisms
On 17 October 2019, on the second day of the conference held in connection with the 10th anniversary of the National Preventive Mechanism, the event's guests discussed the current and emerging needs of the national preventive mechanisms.
Representatives of the United Nations and the Council of Europe torture prevention bodies, national preventive mechanisms, national human rights institutions, influential international organizations working on torture prevention and independent international experts, together with the employees of the Public Defender's Office, presented their opinions about the significant contribution of recommendations and efforts of the National Preventive Mechanism in the elimination of torture, and discussed the need for prioritizing the recommendations and the methods of following up the changes, as well as the forms of cooperation between the National Preventive Mechanism and the Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) and the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT).
The need for expanding the visibility of the National Preventive Mechanism and changing the methods and strategies of communication with the public was also discussed.
