Public Defender Welcomes the Call of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child to the State to Ensure Inspection of the Situation of Children’s Rights at Ninotsminda Boarding School

The Public Defender of Georgia is responding to the interim measure of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child regarding the Ninotsminda boarding school of Georgia, which was published in response to the appeal of the Partnership for Human Rights (NGO).

The Committee urged the State to immediately instruct the relevant monitoring body to inspect the situation of children's rights at the Ninotsminda boarding school. Pursuant to the Constitution of Georgia and currently applied legislation, the Public Defender’s Office represents a monitoring body, and in accordance with the decision of the Committee, it should be immediately enabled to thoroughly inspect the Ninotsminda boarding school.

The Public Defender thanks the organization for its efforts and calls on the Government of Georgia and the Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia to respond immediately to the decision made by the Committee.

It should also be noted that no information has been provided to the Public Defender or the public about the measures taken by the responsible agency or its position, while the needs of the beneficiaries of the Ninotsminda boarding school are neglected on a daily basis.
