Women’s Rights and Gender Equality
Report reflects the situation on women's rights and gender equality issues in the country. According to the Report efficacious steps have not been taken towards encouragement of women’s political participation. The study results of gender mainstreaming practice and challenges indicate that majority of employees at the executive government level, ministries and offices of state ministries are women, though they are seldom represented on leading positions. None of the Ministries has a structural unit of gender equality.
Regardless of the fact that the Public Defender of Georgia called for the transformation of early marriages into an issue needing special attention, implementation of existing regulations in practice still remain a main challenge. Number of early marriages and parents at the moment of their child registration is almost high. The level of public awareness on the rights, reproductive and sexual health is also low.
The reality of violence against women and domestic violence is very difficult. According to the restraining orders issued in 2015, 2726 cases of domestic violence were identified. According to the data of the Chief Prosecutor's Office, 28 cases of murder and attempted murder of women were reported in 2015. Out of these, 16 cases were domestic violence. Majority of the crimes were committed by partners, former partners or by a person who had been denied partner relations.
It is still a challenge for transgender people to change sex record in the civil acts, which in turn hinders education, employment or other processes.
