Information Meetings of Public Defender's Office on Women's Rights

In June 2021, the Gender Department and the Eastern Georgia Division of the Public Defender's Office organized information meetings on women's rights and gender equality in Kakheti, Kvemo Kartli, Samtskhe-Javakheti, Mtskheta-Mtianeti and Shida Kartli municipalities.

The meetings were attended by members of municipal gender equality councils, advisors/persons responsible for gender issues, representatives of local NGOs, students, rural population, internally displaced and ethnic minority women, representatives of regional media organizations and other stakeholders. The meetings were led by Ana Lobzhanidze, a representative of the Gender Department of the Public Defender's Office.

During a meeting with municipal gender equality councils, the main focus was on the importance of gender mainstreaming and the principles that ensure its achievement. Council members were briefed on the assessment of gender policies of local self-government bodies, key findings and recommendations.

The meeting with students made it clear that they do not have information about institutional mechanisms and that their involvement in the implementation of local self-government activities is minimal. During a meeting with media organizations, the main focus was on the proper coverage of domestic violence and femicide, as well as future cooperation.

During meetings, representatives of the regional office of the Eastern Georgia Division provided information to the target groups about the mandate, capabilities and functions of the Public Defender; a number of important activities were planned to help achieve gender equality and improve the rights situation of women in the future.
