Public Defender Welcomes Another Acquittal by Tbilisi City Court

The Public Defender of Georgia welcomes another acquittal by Tbilisi City Court, towards Tevdore Abramov on August 15, 2025.

On April 14, 2025, the Public Defender filed an amicus curiae brief with Tbilisi City Court in the case of Tevdore Abramov, indicating the need to comply with the standards of the Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights in order to ensure neutral evidence during personal searches.

The Public Defender reiterates that in the cases where law enforcement officers have an objective opportunity to obtain neutral evidence, including video recordings, during a search, but fail to do so, and the accusation is essentially based only on the testimonies of police officers, this cannot be considered a practice consistent with human rights, especially in terms of holding a person accountable.

The Public Defender hopes that the acquittal of Tevdore Abramov will have a positive impact on establishing the obligation of the police to obtain neutral evidence and on developing sound judicial practice.
