Recommendation on provision of a new building to the Oni Museum

The Public Defender of Georgia addressed the Minister of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia with a recommendation to conduct relevant activities for provision of the Oni Local (History) Museum with a new building in order to prevent ignoring the principle of respect of cultural identity that implies provision of material/technical support of the museum with appropriate infrastructure and also, the right of every citizen to enjoy cultural values.

During his visit to Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti region, at a meeting held with residents of Oni Municipality, the Public Defender of Georgia received information that the building of the Oni Local Museum was in grave conditions and exhibits there could be subject to possible damage and destruction. The Public Defender visited the Oni Museum on the same day, met with staff of the museum and got acquainted with the situation on the place.

After visual examination it has become apparent that the building is in damaged conditions. There are cracks in walls; the ceiling and floors are damaged; there are no fire protection, central heating, and ventilation, air conditioning, or security systems in the museum. It is impossible to clean the building in an appropriate manner and this puts museum exhibits in danger.

The Public Defender of Georgia believes that the exhibits stored in the Oni History Museum are of great value to not only Racha-Lechkhumi region but also for identify, cultural legacy and universal values of the entire country. Thus, based on principles of the Constitution of Georgia, its protection in its full variety is an obligation of the state, as well as every citizen of Georgia.
