State Agencies Present Reports on Implementation of Public Defender’s Recommendations

On February 27-28, 2018, the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Civil Integration is discussing the situation of implementationof the recommendations issued by the Parliament of Georgia in its Resolution on the 2016 Report of the Public Defender of Georgia on the Situation of Human Rights and Freedoms in Georgia.

The resolution was passed by the Parliament of Georgia on July 14, 2017, and it reflects up to 240 recommendations of the Public Defender. The Parliament instructed the Government, Ministries and various agencies of Georgia to implement the recommendations.

On February 27, reports were presented by common courts, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Justice, Prosecutor's Office, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Ministry of Corrections, after which the meeting continued in a Q&A format.

Public Defender Nino Lomjaria expressed hope that in the future the Public Defender and the Human Rights Committee of the Parliament of Georgia will jointly agree on the recommendations that are to be included in the Parliament’s resolution and that more recommendations, included in the Public Defender’s annual report, will be reflected in the resolution. Nino Lomjaria also plans to develop a mechanism that will allow her office to establish the quality of implementation of the recommendations.

The Public Defender will assess the reports on the implementation of the recommendations by the agencies after the completion of the hearings in the Parliament.
