Public Defender Applies to OSCE/ODIHR relating to Draft Law on Abolition of Gender Quotas
On April 22, 2024, the Public Defender applied to the OSCE/ODIHR to prepare a report on the draft law related to the cancellation of gender quotas.
The public learned about the above-mentioned draft law on April 1. As a result of the expedited consideration, it was passed in the third reading on April 4. The Public Defender responded to the draft law with a public statement and evaluated it negatively. On April 17, the President of Georgia vetoed the draft law and returned it to the Parliament with motivated remarks.
As it is known, based on the appeal of the Monitoring Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the Venice Commission is also preparing an opinion on the draft law.
The Public Defender of Georgia calls on the Parliament of Georgia not to proceed with the draft law until the reports of the Venice Commission and the OSCE/ODIHR are published and to ensure compliance of each decision with human rights standards.
