First Deputy Public Defender Delivered a Speech at the Session of the Human Rights Council

On September 10, 2018, Tamar Gvaramadze, First Deputy Public Defender of Georgia attended 39th Session of the UN Human Rights Council; First Deputy addressed the Council members regarding the Report of the UN Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons on her mission to Georgia.

The report of the Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons, Rosa Kornfeld-Matte, on her mission to Georgia from 12 to 22 March 2018, reflects main challenges and problems pertaining to this field and provides valuable recommendations to improve existing situation. It is worth noting that recommendations in the report coincide with the issues provided in the Parliamentary Reports of the Public Defender of Georgia.

In her address, Tamar Gvaramadze underlined problems of older persons in Georgia, such as lack of adequate housing, social services and ineffective operation of medical and other services adapted to the needs of older persons; First Deputy further underlined discrimination based on age and challenges pertaining to the employment, promotion and training of older persons during labor relationships as well as lack of response and identification mechanisms of domestic violence against older persons.

Public Defender once again expresses her readiness to continue cooperation with relevant state authorities to eradicate problems reflected in the report and to fulfill recommendations issued by the UN Independent Expert. In addition, Public Defender continues her active work toward the development of the work of her Office in order to make it more effective in terms of improving human rights situation of older persons.
