Public Defender's Statement on Mzia Amaglobeli Case

As is known to the public, the Public Defender's Office is actively monitoring the protection of the rights of Mzia Amaglobeli and the effectiveness of the medical care provided to her.

Since the day of her arrest, the Public Defender and his representatives, including a doctor, Doctor of Medicine, employed at the Public Defender's Office, have visited the journalist seven times.

The doctor was at the penitentiary institution on January 27, during which he spoke with both Mzia Amaglobeli and the institution's medical staff, and checked her medical documentation. At that time, Mzia Amaglobeli's health condition was satisfactory.

It should be noted that representatives of the Public Defender's Office have never had the authority to conduct medical examinations in penitentiary institutions themselves.

The Public Defender's Office is informed that additional examinations were provided for Mzia Amaglobeli this week, the results of which have already been requested by the Office. The medical materials will be evaluated again by the doctor employed by the Office, who will also make another visit in the near future.

The medical materials, which the Public Defender's Office currently has, have already been provided to the lawyer defending Mzia Amaglobeli's legitimate interests (Georgian Young Lawyers' Association).

In addition, Mzia Amaglobeli's party receives detailed information on Mzia Amaglobeli's condition and the measures taken by the Public Defender's Office on a permanent basis, either remotely or during personal meetings.

The Public Defender's Office is also informed that the lawyer has requested Mzia Amaglobeli's medical documentation from the Special Penitentiary Service, which has not yet been provided. The Office, in order to expedite this process, immediately addressed the Penitentiary Service in writing. The Office will ensure that the Penitentiary Service does not delay the provision of materials to the defence.

The Public Defender and the Public Defender's Office will continue to actively monitor Mzia Amaglobeli's rights, including her right to health; will continue paying visits to her and the study/evaluation of her medical materials; and we will gradually provide the public with additional information within the framework of the protection of special categories of personal data.
