Public Defender Attends Event Dedicated to Georgian Language Day

On April 11, 2025, Public Defender Levan Ioseliani attended an event dedicated to the Georgian Language Day organized by the Office of the State Minister of Georgia for Reconciliation and Civic Equality, where the results of the Study on the Proficiency of Azerbaijani/Armenian-Speaking Population in the Knowledge of the Official Language and Their Motivation to Study the Official Language were presented.

Speaking at the event, the Public Defender focused on the importance of knowledge of the Georgian language on the path to civil integration of national minorities. Unfortunately, the language barrier is still one of the main obstacles for representatives of national minorities, which is proved by the results of the presented study, according to which up to 30% of the study participants, due to their lack of knowledge of the Georgian language, cannot properly use the services offered by the State.

Levan Ioseliani positively assessed the decision to extend the Georgian language educational programme (the so-called 1+4 programme) until the 2030-2031 academic year. He also focused on the bilingual education model and noted that was is important to increase the number of preschool and general education institutions where bilingual education programmes operate.

At the same time, the Public Defender noted that the language barrier should not become a basis for hindering the realization of human rights and the State is obliged to introduce effective mechanisms to promote the civil integration of national minorities.
