Public Defender Meets Non-Judge Members of High Council of Justice
On 22 January 2019, Public Defender Nino Lomjaria met with non-judge members of the High Council of Justice - Ana Dolidze and Nazi Janezashvili and reviewed the amendments to be made to the rule of appointing judges of the Supreme Court. They talked about the current situation and exchanged their views and opinions.
According to the Public Defender, they agreed that: 1. The process of selecting the judicial candidates must be as open as possible and all judges or other individuals with sufficient qualifications should be able to participate in the competition; 2. The role of members that represent minority in the Council should be increased in the process of selection of candidates and not only the candidates supported by the majority but also those supported by the minority should be submitted to the Parliament; 3. The issue of conflict of interests should be necessarily regulated in the High Council of Justice and the members of the Council who wish to participate in the competition should not have the right to vote, nor in favor of themselves, nor against the competitors.
The Public Defender expressed her readiness to participate in the process of selecting judges and discuss the ways of strengthening the role of the Public Defender in the activities of the High Council of Justice.
At the briefing held after the meeting, the Public Defender talked about the process of electing the Chairperson of the Supreme Court and the necessity of efforts aimed at preventing mistakes.
