Public Defender’s Statement on Challenges in the Country's Social System
The Public Defender of Georgia is responding to the challenges in the country’s social system and is expressing her support to the social workers, who have been working under inadequate conditions, with minimal financial and human resources, for years.
The Public Defender has constantly been speaking about the systemic problems in the social service, which will eventually negatively affect the most vulnerable groups of the population. It is concerning that the problems of transportation, working infrastructure and human resources have not been solved for years.
Along with other social problems in the country, the situation of child's rights are further aggravated by poverty, violence against children and unsatisfactory condition of children under state care. The social worker carries the greatest responsibility in this direction. Consequently, it is important that the state take all appropriate measures for reforming the social system.
The state should fully realize the role of social workers in the process of creating an effective social system in the country and should provide them with appropriate working conditions, as well as high standards of protection and support.
The Public Defender expresses willingness to meet with social workers involved in the process and discuss the problems currently existing in the system.
In addition, the Public Defender urges the Government of Georgia and the relevant state agencies to take measures to strengthen the mentioned profession, since a number of challenges in our country depends on the effective performance of social workers.
